GENERAL INFORMATION.
The Amateur swimming association (ASA) are currently introducing major
changes within swimming coaching and teaching. This will affect both
the way in which coaches and teachers are trained and, the way in which
classes and sessions will be delivered. As we learn more we will of
course share this with the swimmers and parents.
All the poolside staff at H.S.C have one or more ASA qualifications.
These start from ASA Helpers through to Level 1 and level 2 teachers.
Everyone of us are volunteers and give up our time because we love
swimmimg, swim with the club and have children or relatives who swim or
all the afore mentioned.
The Club Committee supports Continious professional development (CPD)
and encourages all our staff volunteers to attend courses and workshops
within the sport. Membership fees, Grants and monies acquired through
Swim 21 Acreditation help to fund this.
ABOUT THE TEACHING GROUPS
As you may know we have 2 sections within teaching at HSC.
Young swimmers who are non-swimmers through to improvers and advanced
swimmers.
The learning section of the club swim at 6.30pm till 7 pm (Termtime)
twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. These are Groups 1 to 4 and
swim across the width of the pool.
Improvers swim in groups 5 to 6 at
7pm
till 7.30 pm Mondays and Wednesdays (termtime). They swim the length of
the pool-25m.
The NATIONAL TEACHING PLAN (NTP) is taught as a framework be HSC and
followed throughout the UK by most clubs, schools and swim schools. This
frame work offers levels 1-12. Level 1 is a framework of skills and
strokes for non-wimmers through to Level 12 ,which would be for the
advanced, pre competition swimmer.
Group 1 will be learning Levels 1 and 2.
Group 2 will be learning Levels 3 and 4.
Group 3 will be learning Levels 5 and 6.
Group 4 will be learning Levels 7 and 8.
Group 5 will be learning 9 and 10.
Group 6 will be learning 11 and 12.
Please be aware that the content within each level is detailed and for
the pupil to attain the Level they must demonstrate consistent strokes
and skills, before the Teacher can award the Level. As there is a
minimum of 2 levels within each group, please expect your child to be in
a group for some considerable time before moving up a group. Staying in
a group for several terms does not mean that progress is not being made.
The ASA has also designed an interesting and fun badge award scheme to
compliment levels 1-12. These include distance, survival, skills, speed
and diving awards which the children can be awarded, throughout the
terms by their teachers. On obtaining an award the teachers will give
your child a badge slip which can be presented at the swim shop
poolside. A certificate and badge can then be purchased by you.
Within each term we hope to offer opportunities for your child to
attempt distance badges, diving (if appropiate for age and ability),
Speed awards and , of course, to practice the Levels for their group.
ABOUT THE POOLSIDE STAFF
Currently we hope that many of our ASA Helpers will embark on their
Level 1 teaching course, when they reach 16 years. We hope that the
Level 1 teachers will also Obtain a level 2 teaching course.
The ASA suggest the Level 2 teachers should supervise Level1 and
helpers. They should also make the final assessments about swim awards
and badges.
Currently Lee Cooke (L2 teacher) carries out these duties at 6.30 pm and
Jane Olive (L@ teacher) does the same at
7 pm.
HSC is currently supporting Laura Salisbury on her Level 2 teachers
course. We all wish her luck.
If any parents would like to volunteer and help please make your self
known to Lee or Jane or , indeed any of the committee. We always
welcome help.
Please remember that many of the teachers have to teach again, clear
away equipment or are about to swim themselves, when they have finished
teaching your child so may not be available all the time for a chat. If
you do have any queires please see a Level 2 teacher or one of the
committee.
Finally, in December we will be holding our annual club championships,
over 2 weekends and swimmers in the teaching section are encouraged to
participate in some of the races, if they wish. Medals are awarded on
the day of the races. We also hold a Presentation Evening/family Disco
in January every year. Keep an eye on the club notice boards for
details and have a look at our web site.
All for now
Hope the Term is enjoyable!
